WHY COULDN'T THE HEROINE JUST SEEK THE HERO FOR HELP? There was nothing for her to loose and in the first place, she wanted to seek his bloody help, and now that he's risen from the dead she clams up like a rusted, creaky window lid. I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE RAVINGS ABOUT THIS AUTHOR'S WRITING, BUT WHILE I ENJOYED THE STORY, ONE THING BOTHERED ME THROUGHOUT THE STORY.

Put her with a seasoned editor who knows how to chip away the excess to get to the story’s gem, and she’ll be one of the greats. Jane Godman has the potential to become a fantastic romantic storyteller. Overall, it was an interesting story with characters that stuck with me long after I had finished reading. This scene and other head-scratching instances would’ve been easily remedied with more internal dialogue. Was he conflicted, but could no longer resist her or did he just stop giving a damn? One gets the feeling that there may be some interesting conflict happening, but we never really get to “experience” it. Then, all of a sudden-out of the blue-he tosses his concerns out the window. For instance: our Hero continuously rejects his Heroine’s wanton (for the era) advances-out of concern for her safety, reputation (not exactly sure).

The biggest problem (beside irksome editing errors) was that I had a hard time understanding why the main characters did some of the things they did.

The story itself was interesting though the pacing could have been improved if Godman had “shown us” more (through actions) and “told us” less. The hero was a delightful combination of charming and boorish (my favorite type) while our heroine was naïvely bold, courageous and-on occasion-a bit bratty. My only experiences with romance novels featuring any of the Jacobite risings have been from a Scottish perspective, so Jane Godman’s The Rebel’s Promise was an intriguing variation from the expected. I really enjoyed The Rebel’s Promise by Jane Godman and I highly recommend it to all readers. I also liked how she continued to develop the supporting characters in the story and build to their critical role in the climax of the story. The lead characters were easy to identify with and very real to life. Jane Godman did an excellent job of developing the characters. It will keep you glued to the book and wanting more. Not only was the story a romance novel with all the expected “mushy” stuff, but the action and intrigue makes it a book for all readers. The story was very believable and it was easy to imagine life in the aristocratic world of 18th century London. I really enjoyed all the subtle twist and turns in the plot. The storyline was well developed and easy to follow. It is a well written and exciting book that I found hard to put down. The Rebels’ Promise by Jane Godman is an English/ Scottish romance novel with all the adventure and intrigue you would expect from 1745 England.
